How to Connect Apple CarPlay in a MINI

Apple CarPlay puts your iPhone's maps, calls, messages, and music on your MINI's display and Siri. In a MINI it connects wirelessly - here's how to set it up, reconnect it, switch between CarPlay and the MINI menu, and fix the most common problems.

MINI uses wireless Apple CarPlay, so you connect over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi rather than plugging in a cable. The exact menu names on your screen can look a little different depending on your MINI's model year and infotainment system - a MINI with the newest MINI Operating System 9 touchscreen looks different from an earlier MINI Connected system. The steps below cover both. If you're not sure which system your MINI has, our team in Darien can identify it for you.

Quick setup checklist

Before you start, confirm all of the following on your iPhone and in your MINI:

  • A compatible iPhone (Apple CarPlay works on iPhone 5 or newer).
  • The iPhone is running a current version of iOS.
  • Bluetooth is turned on (Settings > Bluetooth).
  • Wi-Fi is turned on - wireless CarPlay uses it to carry data after pairing.
  • Siri is enabled (Settings > Siri & Search).
  • The MINI is parked and switched on before you begin.

How to connect Apple CarPlay in a MINI

Because MINI menus differ by generation, follow the section that matches your MINI. Start with MINI Operating System 9 if you have one of the newest MINIs with the large round center touchscreen; otherwise use the previous-system steps.

MINI Operating System 9 (newest MINI touchscreen)

  1. Park the MINI and switch it on. Keep it parked for the whole setup.
  2. On your iPhone, confirm Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Siri are on.
  3. On the MINI touchscreen, open the phone/telephone area, then choose the option to connect a new device (in the mobile-device settings).
  4. Select Apple CarPlay, then confirm the prompt on the MINI display.
  5. On your iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and tap the device whose name begins with “MINI.”
  6. Check that the code shown on your iPhone matches the code on the MINI screen, then confirm on both.
  7. Approve the Bluetooth, contacts, and CarPlay permission prompts, then tap Use CarPlay on the iPhone.
  8. The Apple CarPlay home screen loads on your MINI display. You're connected.

Previous MINI systems (MINI Connected / “MY MINI”)

  1. Park the MINI and switch it on.
  2. On your iPhone, confirm Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Siri are on.
  3. On the MINI display, open “MY MINI”System SettingsMobile DevicesConnect New Device.
  4. Under Select Function, choose Apple CarPlay, then press Confirm.
  5. On your iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and tap the device beginning with “MINI.”
  6. Confirm the passcode matches, then press OK on the MINI and Pair on the iPhone.
  7. Tap Allow if asked to sync contacts and favorites.
  8. When your iPhone shows “Use CarPlay with MINI?”, tap Use CarPlay. The CarPlay home screen loads.

Menu wording varies slightly by model year and software version. If a label on your screen doesn't match exactly, look for the closest equivalent under the phone or mobile-device settings.

Our own MINI of Darien walkthrough for connecting Apple CarPlay in a 2025–2026-2027 MINI Cooper with MINI Operating System 9.

How to reconnect automatically

Once your iPhone is paired, wireless CarPlay should reconnect on its own each time you get in and start the MINI — as long as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi stay on and the phone is nearby. You don't need to repeat the setup.

If more than one phone is saved, the MINI connects to whichever it finds first, so you may need to choose your preferred phone in the MINI's mobile-device list. A few things can stop automatic reconnection: Bluetooth or Wi-Fi switched off, Airplane Mode or Low Power Mode limiting the connection, another saved phone connecting first, or CarPlay being restricted on the iPhone. Turn the radios back on and select your phone to reconnect.

How to switch between CarPlay and the MINI interface

You don't have to disconnect to use your MINI's own menus. To leave CarPlay, press the MINI menu or Home control (or tap the MINI menu button on the touchscreen) to return to the native MINI display. To go back into CarPlay, tap the Apple CarPlay icon or select your phone again from the phone menu. Your phone stays connected the whole time.

How to disconnect or remove an iPhone

To fully remove a phone — for example before selling the car or after a bad pairing - delete it in both places:

  • In the MINI: open the mobile-device list, select the phone, and choose the option to remove or delete the device.
  • On the iPhone: go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your MINI, and choose Forget This Car. It also helps to forget the MINI under Settings > Bluetooth.

Removing the pairing from both sides clears old records and is the cleanest way to start fresh if you plan to pair again.

MINI Apple CarPlay troubleshooting

Most connection problems come down to a setting that's off or an old pairing that needs clearing. Common symptoms include: the phone not appearing, the pairing request timing out, CarPlay connecting over Bluetooth but not launching, CarPlay dropping out, audio playing through the wrong source, more than one saved phone competing, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth disabled, Siri disabled, stale pairing records, or an iPhone or MINI that needs a software update.

Work through these steps in order - stop as soon as CarPlay connects:

  1. Confirm compatibility and settings: a supported iPhone, current iOS, and Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Siri all on.
  2. Restart the iPhone.
  3. Restart or cycle the MINI's infotainment system only in the normal, owner-supported way (switch the vehicle off, open the door, and let it fully power down before restarting).
  4. Remove the pairing from both the MINI and the iPhone (see the section above).
  5. Pair the phone again from scratch.
  6. Check for updates: install any pending iOS update, and have your MINI's software checked for updates.
  7. If it still won't connect, contact MINI of Darien - the cause may be a software or hardware issue that needs a technician.

Stick to these supported steps. Avoid hidden service menus or unofficial resets - they can change vehicle settings in ways you don't intend.

Still can't connect after these steps? The MINI of Darien service team can identify your MINI's infotainment system and check its connectivity features. Schedule a service visit or contact us and we'll help you get set up.

Does every MINI have Apple CarPlay?

Not necessarily. Apple CarPlay availability depends on your MINI's model year, the infotainment system it was built with, and the equipment it was ordered with. Newer MINIs with MINI Operating System 9 include it, while some earlier MINIs offered it as part of an option package. Rather than assume, confirm it for your specific car by checking your vehicle's connectivity settings, your VIN or window sticker, or your owner's manual - or ask MINI of Darien to check for you.

When to contact MINI of Darien

Setting up CarPlay is usually a quick, do-it-yourself job. It's worth involving our team when the basics don't solve it: CarPlay keeps disconnecting, the menu options you expect are missing, you think your MINI's software needs an update, or you're seeing broader Bluetooth or infotainment problems. We can identify your system, confirm what your MINI supports, and sort out connectivity issues so your iPhone works the way it should.

Frequently asked questions

Is Apple CarPlay wireless in a MINI?

Yes. MINI uses wireless Apple CarPlay over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so you don't need a cable. Whether your specific MINI has CarPlay still depends on its year and equipment.

Why won't my MINI connect to Apple CarPlay?

Usually it's a setting that's off (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Siri), an old pairing that needs clearing, or software that needs updating. Restart the iPhone, remove the pairing from both devices, pair again, and check for updates.

Does Bluetooth need to be enabled?

Yes. Bluetooth handles the initial pairing between your iPhone and the MINI, so it must be on for CarPlay to connect.

Does Wi-Fi need to be enabled?

Yes. Wireless CarPlay uses a Wi-Fi connection to carry data after the Bluetooth handshake, so leave Wi-Fi on even if you're not joining a network.

Can multiple iPhones be connected to a MINI?

You can pair and save more than one phone, but only one runs CarPlay at a time. If several are saved, the MINI may connect to whichever it finds first.

How do I make my iPhone the primary device?

Open the mobile-device list in your MINI and select your iPhone as the connected device. Removing phones you no longer use makes your preferred phone connect automatically.

How do I remove an old phone?

Delete it in both places: remove the device from the MINI's mobile-device list, and on the iPhone go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap the MINI, and choose Forget This Car.
